The Straw Hats stepped out of the guardian temple; their clothes still dusted with rubble. The path led into a bustling village at the edge of the forest, where the air was thick with the scent of frying chilies, sizzling fish, and simmering curries.
“FOOOOOOOD!!” Luffy bolted ahead instantly, eyes popping like stars.
“Wait!! Don’t….ugh, he’s gone already,” Nami groaned, running after him.
Sanji froze on the spot, both hands clutching his heart. The streets were lined with women in bright saris selling food, their bangles chiming as they stirred giant pots of curry. His nose bled violently as he collapsed to his knees. “So… beautiful… every last one of them…!”
Chopper sniffed the air, his little hooves twitching. “Spices! I can smell at least thirty different herbs I’ve never seen before!”
“Yohoho!” Brook twirled his cane. “Do they serve tea for skeletons, I wonder?”
But amidst the laughter and chaos, Jinbe’s eyes narrowed. His voice was low and steady. “This is no ordinary feast. These smells… this village is known in legend. It was said the Pandyas trained their guardians not only in temples, but in kitchens. A test of fire and flavor.”
“A test?!” Usopp shrieked, already sweating at the thought. “What kind of psycho tests people with food?!”
“Sanji’s kind,” Zoro muttered.
And right on cue, a loud voice echoed across the market.
“So… the outsiders have come at last.”
A massive man stepped forward, his apron scorched black, his hands glowing faintly red. His eyes burned like hot coals, and in his belt hung ladles like weapons. The crowd gasped as he slammed down a giant pot, steam hissing.
“I am the Keeper of Spices, Karuppan!” he roared. “Long ago, I ate the Chili-Chili Fruit. My body is fire, my soul is flavor! If you want the path to Kumari Kandam’s treasure, you must defeat me in the Trial of Spice!”
Sanji’s eyes blazed brighter than his cigarette. “Trial of spice, huh?” He stepped forward, kicking Luffy aside as the captain tried to dive headfirst into a pot. “This one’s mine.”
“Oi, Sanji!” Luffy whined. “But I’m hungry!!”
“This isn’t about food, captain. It’s about art.” Sanji cracked his knuckles. “And I’ll never lose in the kitchen.”
The Duel of Flames
A massive stone hearth was lit in the village square. Karuppan raised his hands, fire bursting from his palms, and the ingredients around him danced in the heat, chilies sizzling, spices bursting open, fish searing midair.
“Chili-Chili Inferno Stew!!” he bellowed, a pot of flaming curry swirling like a volcano.
The villagers cheered in awe.
Sanji smirked, tying his hair back. He twirled his knives like blades. “Watch closely, ladies… this is a man’s true passion.”
He danced across the kitchen, each step a kick, each flick of his wrist precise. “Poêle à Frire Shoot!” His fiery kick roasted the fish midair before it fell neatly into his pan. A swirl of herbs followed, Sanji’s hands moving too fast for the eye.
The duel wasn’t just cooking, it was a battle of fire and flavor. Karuppan’s chili blasts roared like cannonballs, while Sanji weaved between them with fiery kicks, turning the flames into searing flavor.
“His heat… it’s insane!” Usopp cried, shielding his eyes.
“Sanji-kun!!” Nami swooned, her eyes sparkling.
Zoro crossed his arms, unimpressed. “Tch. It’s just food.”
“YOU WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND!!” Sanji roared back mid-spin, slamming down a finished dish with elegance.
At last, both chefs presented their meals. Karuppan’s bowl of curry still smoked with ghost peppers, glowing red hot. Sanji’s dish gleamed golden, balanced perfectly with spice, sweetness, and aroma.
The villagers gasped as the elder tasted them. His eyes watered from Karuppan’s fire, but when he tasted Sanji’s… silence fell.
Then, tears rolled down the old man’s face. “This… this flavor carries love. Balance. Respect. This is the cooking of one worthy to walk the Pandya path.”
The crowd erupted into cheers.
Karuppan’s flames dimmed. He bowed his head, handing Sanji a small scroll wrapped in lotus-patterned silk. “You’ve earned it, cook. This scroll holds the next clue, the way forward on the Lotus Path.”
Sanji tucked the scroll into his jacket, lighting another cigarette. “Heh. All in a day’s work.”
“GIVE ME FOOD!!” Luffy screamed, diving at Sanji’s pot.
The villagers laughed, but Jinbe’s expression was solemn. He watched the glowing lotus emblem on the scroll.
“First guardians, now spice keepers…” he murmured. “The Pandyas left many trials. If even their kitchens test warriors… what lies ahead will not be simple.”
